Why Pixel Width Matters

Character Count Alone Is Misleading

Google truncates titles and descriptions based on pixel width, not a fixed character count — a title full of narrow letters (“i”, “l”, “t”) fits more characters than one full of wide letters (“W”, “M”, “O”). This tool measures both.

Title Tags

Keep titles under roughly 580px (about 50–60 characters) so they don’t get cut off with an ellipsis in Google’s search results. A truncated title looks unfinished and can lower your click-through rate.

Meta Descriptions

Keep descriptions under roughly 920px (about 150–160 characters). Google sometimes rewrites descriptions anyway, but a well-written one still gets used more often than not.

People Also Ask

Title & Meta Description Questions

What is the ideal length for an SEO title tag?
Around 50–60 characters, or roughly under 580 pixels wide, is the safe zone for most searches on desktop. Titles longer than this typically get cut off with an ellipsis in Google’s results, which can make the page look incomplete and lower click-through rate.
What is the ideal length for a meta description?
Around 150–160 characters, or roughly under 920 pixels, is the typical safe zone. Google frequently rewrites meta descriptions to better match a specific search query, so treat this as a strong default rather than a guarantee of exactly what will display.
Why does this tool measure pixels instead of just characters?
Google’s search results truncate based on actual rendered width, not a fixed character count. A title made of narrow letters fits more characters before truncating than one made of wide letters. Measuring pixel width gives a far more accurate picture of what will actually display.
Does a perfect title and meta description guarantee higher rankings?
No. Title and meta description length affect click-through rate and how complete your listing looks in search results — they’re not a direct ranking factor on their own. They matter alongside genuine content quality, technical SEO, and off-page signals, not instead of them.
